Founded by Mackenzie Leigh & Ryan Ward, Heart Shaped Movies is a commercial narrative film production company based in Los Angeles & Toronto.
Mackenzie is a producer based in Los Angeles and Toronto. Recipient of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s U.S. INPUT Producer Fellowship Award and Telefilm’s International Marketing Program Grant, Mackenzie is a fellow of the Hot Docs Accelerator Program, as well as the JETS Co-Production Initiative at Berlinale. In 2017, Mackenzie produced the short film, AmeriKa, one of six official U.S. entries at the 41st International INPUT Television Conference alongside Emmy-nominated documentary, Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution. In 2017, Mackenzie also produced the short Native American fantasy film, In the Beginning was Water and Sky, which is distributed on PBS, ShortsTV, NativeFlix, and the National Film Board of Canada. Mackenzie also produced the award-winning feature film, Son of the Sunshine, which premiered as one of Indiewire’s Top 5 Films to Watch at Slamdance. It screened at over 30 festivals, winning 13 awards, and was released theatrically and on Netflix, Movie Central, The Movie Network, Comcast, Amazon, and Hulu. Mackenzie was recently shortlisted for the 2018 Sundance Creative Producing Lab. She is currently developing a television series version of AmeriKa, and the dramatic thriller feature film, Pure Science Fiction.
Ryan is a writer/director based in Los Angeles and Toronto. His debut feature film, Son of the Sunshine, garnered him a Best Original Screenplay Genie Award (Canadian Oscar) nomination from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, the highest award for screenwriting in Canada. The film was praised as "bleakly beautiful and daring" by the CBC, "heart-wrenchingly authentic and powerful" by the Toronto Star, and "a gem of filmmaking genius" by the National Post. Ryan’s short film, In the Beginning was Water and Sky, launched on PBS last fall. His feature film script, AmeriKa, was shortlisted for the 2018 Sundance Screenwriter’s Lab and was supported by Telefilm’s International Marketing Program to present at this year’s JETS Initiative at Berlinale. He is currently developing the television series, AmeriKa, and the feature film, Pure Science Fiction, recipient of the Bell Media Harold Greenberg Screenwriting Award.
